If an insurance company settles a case on your behalf, it must report all of the settlements to the Department of Health. Generally speaking, the Department of Health will not post settlements until there are more than two. If there is a claim of a wrongful death, and if you have the case settled on your behalf the Department of Heath has the discretion, and they have done so in the past, to post that settlement on the website for the general public to see.
This is a potential problem for you, as people may decide to use other physicians simply because you have that posted against your name, and it is visible for everyone to see. Take a deep breath and decide, “Do I want to let the insurance company settle the case?” Some cases should be settled, and you must say yes, but not all. Understand the ramifications of what can happen if you do agree to the settlement.
